A leading-edge performing arts centre in Exeter has been given a £10k Start Up Loan boost through SWIG Finance to scale up operations.
Led by Classical Brit Award nominee Cameron Mills, the Cameron Mills Group provides students with a learn-by-doing approach with practical lessons that focus on working towards bigger goals, such as live gigs.
The Cameron Mills Group now has two venues, with the newest one in Exeter High Street being launched in September 2024. The company works with over 1,000 children every week and was recently awarded Best New Business at the Exeter Living Awards 2024.
The business currently employs two full-time members of staff, and 30 local freelance music experts.
The Start Up Loan has helped Cameron to buy equipment for a commercial recording studio and technology to support their new animation course.
Of the funding, Cameron commented “Music has always been an important part of my life. With music slowly disappearing from school curriculum, I wanted to make sure that there was somewhere for musical people to really hone their talents and develop professionally. This funding has meant that we could drive our growth plans at a much quicker pace, offering stand-out service from the outset. Our business model has proved to be very successful, and our longer-term goals will be rolling this out further afield”.
Jules Burton from SWIG Finance said “Cameron is incredibly passionate about what he does, and the fact that he is only 25 years old and has already opened two premises in 12 months says a lot about his character! What I liked most about this business is the fact that Cameron is sharing his talent, and his network, to help young people thrive in the creative arts”.
