The level 2 agriculture students from Duchy College walked away as champions in their class at this year’s Launceston & Callington Ploughing Association Ploughing Match.
The event, held at Wiggaton Farm, North Petherwin, saw record crowds attending the one day competition and more entries than ever competing for the top spot.
Duchy College teams were placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd, for the third year in a row, which was a fantastic result for the College, with the team of Toby Blencowe, Hazel Coward and Ginny Knight winning the overall title.
Level 3 agriculture student Jess Dunn won the best plough operator in her class.
The plots the students were allocated were very challenging being on a slope and the ground conditions were very wet in places. The students were not fazed by this and all worked in their teams well. All students did extremely well as most had never ploughed before and only had one practice due to the poor weather this autumn.
Event organiser Andrew Medland said it was a “fantastic match” this year with a record number of people coming to watch.
“The high standard of competition was brilliant with plenty of people taking part,” he continued.
“The teams from Duchy College were absolutely superb and it is fantastic to see so many young people coming into this competition.”
The Duchy College teams were mentored by Tom Gill, Workshop Manager at the College, Steve Gill and Ian Hampton. All the students are currently studying Agriculture.
Team Lead for Agriculture, Jo Vincent, said it was “a fantastic result for our students and very well deserved”.
“For me this is a clear demonstration that these individuals are on the right path, they are developing their skills and have the capability to succeed in their chosen careers,” she added.
Andrew added: “The standard this year was very good, which can only be a good thing for the future of the competition. But I’d also like to extend my thanks to the Harvey Brothers, because if it wasn’t for them loaning us the land, this event would not be possible.”
