Devon based charity gets backing from flag bearing Olympian, Hannah Mills.
Planet Earth Games are today announcing their virtual Summer Games with the backing of British Olympians, Para Olympians, professional sports people and leading UK eco companies. Starting on 1st August, 31 daily challenges will be set online across Planet Earth Games web site and social media. The games are free to enter with daily prizes to be won.
Working with national supporters like Riverford Organic Farmers, Keep Britain Tidy, Forestry England, Royal Yachting Association and international sports people like Olympian flag bearer Hannah Mills; Planet Earth Games have attracted a loyal following who enjoy both the summer and winter events. Those participating report increases in their physical activity and a widening of their knowledge about the challenges our planet faces. This year’s games sees the return of several British Olympians, professional sports stars from the worlds of rugby and cricket alongside leading eco-brands like Mooncup and Riverford Farm Organics.
The Planet Earth Games was first launched as an Exeter based event in July 2019 with over 5,000 young people participating in a range of popular sports. The growth in popularity of outdoor exercise and a growing awareness of the impact humans have on the natural environment have been instrumental in the growth of the bi-annual games. The Covid pandemic moved the games to an online format with last year’s summer games reaching over one million people.
“We are very excited to be announcing the Summer Games 2021,” stated Chris Broadbent, CEO, Planet Earth Games. “The Planet Earth Games ethos is about protecting people and the planet through the power of sport and activity. With the Tokyo Olympics accompanying the opening two weeks of our Games, we are confident of attracting even more participants this year. Being online, the daily challenges being set are safe, environmentally friendly and free!”
The Planet Earth Games 2021 offers 31 daily challenges. Each challenge is through a short video by leading sports personalities and eco-friendly businesses. From litter picking to beach cleaning to taking a dip in a river or the ocean, those participating are asked to record their challenge attempt with a photo or video uploading their entry online via the Planet Earth Games website.
“We have an exciting set of challenges being set and it’s fabulous to be working with such a wealth of famous sporting talent,” explained Ruth Faulkner, Operations Director, Planet Earth Games. “Registering and uploading challenge attempts are much easier this year. Last year we attracted interest from over one million people across the planet and with what we have on offer this year, we are confident this audience will grow.”
Central to the Planet Earth Games ethos is promoting a better relationship with nature. Challenges set during the Planet Earth Games encourage people to be active outside of their home, office or school. Building on the success of last year’s games, the organisers hope to encourage many more people out into their local natural environment.
“One simple way to protect our natural environment is to understand and appreciate it,” commented Andrew Cross, Chair, Planet Earth Games. “We protect what we love and seeing the beauty of what surrounds us nutures that protection. Whether your green space is your garden, a park, a hill, a mountain or a beach; they are all perfect venues for completing a Planet Earth Games Challenge.”
The Planet Earth Summer Games runs from 1st August to 31st August 2021. Participation is free requiring only an online registration on the Planet Earth Games website at www.planetearthgames.org.
