Zero waste solution for North Devon AONB Marathon & Half Marathon

Earth Friendly Foodware today announces it has been chosen to supply and dispose of the paper drinking cups used by runners in the forthcoming North Devon AONB Marathon & Half Marathon – the toughest and most beautiful race in the UK. The chosen cups have been manufactured by Vegware and will be disposed of using Earth Friendly Foodware’s newly introduced service Return to Energy.

All Vegware supplied cups are manufactured in the British Isles from EU materials. Wherever possible, Vegware use recycled card and paper and only uses virgin materials from a recognised forestry source with a recognised chain of custody. All inks used for printing are either water or vegetable based. All Vegware products are Vincotte accredited.

Return to Energy is a postal collection service that processes used compostable food and drink packaging products into energy. Race organisers will be collecting used cups and returning them in the boxes they arrived in, for processing into gas energy for domestic use.

“We are delighted to be supporting North Devon Hospice,” commented Andrew Cross, Founder, Earth Friendly Foodware. “Holding events like this marathon in an environmentally protected area can present environmental problems. The Return to Energy service offers this event’s organisers the opportunity to ensure their waste does not end up in landfill.”

“North Devon Hospice are grateful to Earth Friendly Foodware for their support, “stated Jess Burford-Redgrove, Community & Events Fundraiser, North Devon Hospice. “We contacted Plastic Free North Devon to get advice on how we can improve our environmental impact. They recommended we talk with Earth Friendly Foodware and we are delighted with the outcome.”

“Helping event organisers reduce their plastic footprint is a key Plastic Free North Devon objective,” commented Anne-Marie Eveleigh, Campaigns Co-ordinator, Plastic Free North Devon. “Events like this marathon are being held in an area that needs our protection. Where single use cups are being used, we strongly advise event organisers to avoid oil-based plastic and seek to dispose of any waste created in a responsible manner.”
