A group of 14 practising and aspiring managers have recently completed a Level 5 module in Leadership and Management as part of the Hidden Talent in Devon project at City College Plymouth.
The course participants came from a range of backgrounds, including existing City College students and employed individuals looking to update their skills, and upon completing the module, students were registered with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
Karen Sweeting, who led the course, said it “was a brilliant way for students to get a taste of the higher level qualifications we have available at City College and also gain valuable skills that they can implement in their workplace. I am pleased that all students successfully completed the course and that two of the students are already in the process of applying for the full Level 7 Strategic Management and Leadership qualification”.
The module attracted students already working as managers or leaders, typically accountable to a senior manager or business owner, as well as students who are aspiring to such roles. The course focused on the primary role of leaders and managers: leading and managing individuals and teams to deliver aims and objectives in line with organisational strategy. Students covered topics including personal development as a manager and leader; developing skills and competencies against objectives; and enabling impactful relationships with consideration of a team’s well being.
One student enjoyed “gaining an understanding of the different management styles, being able to see these within the workplace and understand the needs of [their] team.” Whilst another noted that “all the resources were very good and it [was] really helpful being able to access the CMI web tools.”
Hidden Talent in Devon is funded by the European Social Fund and aims to increase employee skills, widen participation in higher level training and support local employers wishing to upskill their teams.
