Professor Anne Carlisle, Vice-Chancellor of Falmouth University, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the New Year 2019 Honours List.

The award is in recognition of her services to Higher Education and the regional economy.

At Falmouth University, Professor Carlisle has led the transformation of the institution from a well-respected art college into a leading creative university with a global reputation, and a crucial role as an anchor institution and major economic contributor in Cornwall.

Professor Carlisle was appointed Vice-Chancellor & Chief Executive of what was then University College Falmouth in 2009. During her tenure, she has led the successful merger with Dartington College of Art in 2009, the granting of full university status in 2012 and has overseen the significant growth in student numbers and diversification of the institution’s course portfolio.

Professor Carlisle’s focus on teaching excellence and graduate employment also led to the University achieving Gold in the government’s Teaching Excellence Framework in June 2017 and during her tenure the University has won a number of awards that recognise the quality and strength of the institution. Professor Carlisle plays an important role in the wider Cornwall economy being a founder member of the Local Enterprise Partnership Board where she lead the work on how to develop the future economy of Cornwall & IOS. She serves on a number of other significant bodies involved in developing Cornwall

A fine artist by training, Professor Carlisle founded a creative publishing venture, Circa Publications, with fellow students while still studying at Ulster University. This experience informed her later approach to higher education. Throughout her career she has championed ‘doing it for real’ as a powerful learning vehicle and advocated for creativity and design thinking as drivers of enterprise and innovation.

This approach led Professor Carlisle to establish Falmouth University’s ground-breaking business formation and incubation Master’s programme, Launchpad, in 2017. Bringing together graduates to form businesses in partnership with global industry, the programme will provide an important contribution to the local and national economies, creating over 500 high value jobs in Cornwall within five years, based in high-growth tech start-ups.
