College Hosts exhilarating Army Challenge Days

By | |

Military Academy and Public Services students from all over Cornwall & Devon were put through their paces as they took on the tough Army Challenge Days.

Learners descended on Duchy College Stoke Climsland, near Callington, for the challenge that is designed to give those on military preparation/public services courses the opportunity to compete and showcase their leadership and military skills in a fun and controlled environment.

Colleges participating included Duchy College, Bicton College, Cornwall College Camborne, Plymouth City College, Discovery College and Petroc College.

Ten teams of 10 students competed each day. Day one was for first year students and day two was for second and third year students. Duchy College Stoke Climsland won gold on day one and silver on day two.

Duchy College student, Max Dennison, team captain of the gold winning team, said it was a real surprise as “we didn’t expect to win”.

“It was a fantastic day and a great experience overall,” he continued.

“I was really proud of my team and after a few teething problems we all worked together well.”

The activities consisted of gun run fitness race, airsoft range, problem solving team tasks, a planning exercise, observation and range finding – including laser range finders and an introduction to kit and equipment.

“My favourite activity was the gun run – we all worked together really well and encouraged each other to complete the physical challenge,” Max added.

Lead Recruiter at ACC Plymouth , Jim Thisby, said  the event was an excellent opportunity for students.

“It has given us the opportunity to forge a good working relationship between the Regular Army, ACC Plymouth and all the colleges that are preparing students for military and public services,” he added.

Team Lead for MAPS at Duchy College, Neil Harris, said  all staff were proud to be involved with hosting this year’s Public Service Challenge along with the Army Careers office in Plymouth.

“The challenge day has been an excellent opportunity for our students to compete with others from different colleges and the icing on the cake was the gold and silver medals,” he added.
