A sport student is celebrating sailing away with Februarys Cornwall Sports Partnership ‘Volunteer of the Month’ award.
Lauren Bowdler is no ordinary student; studying two A-levels alongside a sports diploma, in her spare time she also plays and coaches hockey and sailing as well as finds the time to help lead a local Guide Group.
As a winner and to acknowledge Lauren’s hard work, she received a certificate, a £50 voucher to be used towards any CPD award or qualification and will also be nominated for the 2018 Cornwall Sports Awards.
Lauren said how surprised she was to have been nominated.
“My lecturer nominated me due to taking part in the coaching activator programme and also because I coach hockey and sailing,” she explained.
“As well as the coaching, I also play mixed and ladies hockey and last year took part in the sailing world championships – this coming summer I’m hoping to complete at Exmouth in the nationals. I’m going to use the £50 towards a Hockey Coaching Qualification to add to my other qualifications that I have already achieved since being at Cornwall College.”
Team Lead for Sport, Mark Ferguson-Smith nominated Lauren and said she deserves a “huge amount of credit”.
“Lauren has already volunteered over 20 hours this academic year to school and community sport across Cornwall,” he explained.
“In addition to balancing her study time by completing a Level 3 BTEC subsidiary Diploma in Sport and A-level Physical Education this year, she has also been offered a unconditional place at Southampton Solent University for which these volunteering hours have added value to her UCAS application.”
Cornwall Sports Partnership has been running the Volunteer of the Month award since 2015, the award gives school, colleges, sports clubs and community organisations the chance to nominate Volunteers they feel deserve recognition for their achievements.
A selection panel chooses a winner for each month and the decision is based on the information provided in the nomination form.
Workforce Lead for Cornwall Sports Partnership, Robert Harrison said Lauren has shown “a real commitment to volunteering within local schools, her college and the community”.
“She is a well deserving winner of the Cornwall Sports Partnership – February Volunteer of the Month award,” he added.
