Sports tour gives students a flying start

Students from Cornwall have enjoyed a sports tour of epic proportions around the UK.

Sport and A-level PE learners from Cornwall College’s St. Austell and Camborne campuses kicked off the annual Cornwall College Sports Tour with a visit to Birmingham and Manchester.

Course Co-ordinator for Academic Sports Studies, Sam Kenny explained that the intention of the trip was to provide the students with the opportunity to witness the “highest level of sports performance and facilities” in the hope that it inspires them to continue their pursuit of a career in sport.

“The trip provided the students with new experiences that they wouldn’t normally have access to, whilst creating memories that they can look back on fondly with their peers,” he added.

The three day tour started with a visit to Etihad Stadium, which they toured and watched Manchester City against West Bromwich Albion EPL football match.

They also took park in paintballing, a BMX session at the National Cycling Centre, and a visit to Trafford Centre.

The students gained an understanding other types of sports venues and activities such as the National Football Museum, Kick Air – The North West’s largest indoor freestyle park and I-fly, which is skydiving experience without having to jump out of a plane!

Sports Diploma Lylie Douglas said that the sports tour was a “fantastic experience” due to the activities being so interesting.

“We got to take part in experiences we had never done before, for me the highlight was the Indoor Skydiving at I-fly because many of us were a bit apprehensive but we still took part thanks to the group being so supportive and encouraging!”

The trip was also beneficial to Lylie, who is aiming to become a teacher, as it helped her understand the hard work and risk assessments that are involved with planning a student trip.

They finished off their final day watching the Aston Villa against Burton Albion Championship match at Villa Park, Birmingham before heading back to Cornwall.
