A pioneering project to get people into paid employment in Cornwall has helped a parish centre with its maintenance.
St Petroc’s Parish Centre in Bodmin played host to the group of students working towards their Construction Skills Certification also known as the CSCS Labourers Card.
Lecturer Matt Rundle explained that the local young men who took part in the maintenance of the St Petroc’s Parish Centre were part of a CSCS Health and Safety Course, which helps those wishing to pursue a career in the construction industry.
“Part of the course was for them to get engaged onto a Practical element to allow them to get the more skills in various methods of Repairs and alterations on a local community building,” he continued.
“They all got a sense of enjoyment and enthusiasm which showed a good standard of practical work within their community.”
Committee Secretary of St Petroc’s Parish Centre, Muriel Nichols, gave the entire group each a signed reference from the St Petroc’s management team in the hope that their hard work will lead to future employment prospects.
Liverty (formerly DCH) supported the group with the materials to complete the refurbishment of some of the rooms and the outside wall of the centre.
Community Development Worker from Liverty, Mai Evans said Liverty “values its partnership with Cornwall College”.
“We are committed to maximising the training and employment opportunities for local people living in our housing,” he added.
On successful completion of the CSCS course and CSCS test, students receive their CSCS Labourers Card (Green) which is a requirement to gain employment within the construction industry.
