Day at the races delights students

Exeter Racecourse gave up its behind-the-scenes secrets for a lucky group of students from Cornwall.
The Duchy College students received an introductory talk from Lucy Johnson, the race course manager, giving them an insight to the facilities, what level of racing goes on there and went through the race card and how it works.
She then went on to discuss the job roles and employment opportunities in the racing industry.
Students, Jordan Pogson, who previously attended Marine Academy Plymouth, and Emily Mettam, who previously attended Budehaven Community School, said they “all really enjoyed the visit”.
“For some it was their first time to a race course, it was really interesting and it opened our eyes to what employment opportunities there are in this area,” Jessica added.
The students then saw the parade ring and were told about the process of being declared, the role of the vet, the checks they do e.g. the drug tests, where the horses are tacked up and the aftercare of the horses. 
It was then onto the track itself were they were shown steeple and hurdle fences and learnt about ground conditions.  The culmination of the day was getting to watch the races.
Programme Manager, Zoe Barwell said many of the students have “never had the experience of going to the races before”. 
“To be offered this opportunity by Exeter Racecourse has given them all a better knowledge of this part of the equine industry and highlighted to them potential future careers,” she added.
Equine Team Lead, Alison Abbey, said it was “a great opportunity”.
“Our students have gained experience of the racing industry and it’s been a great opportunity for them to consider future employment in this area.”
