Lecture by: Professor Peter Stott MBE, Science Fellow at the Met Office
This open lecture is being given on Wednesday the 12th November at 18:15 (for 18:30) in the Devonport Lecture Theatre, Portland Square Building on the Campus of the University of Plymouth. The entrance to the building faces North Hill, and there is full disabled access. There is, unfortunately, no parking available on the University Campus, though public parking is available close to the University.
Anyone may attend the lecture, at no charge, although intending participants should reserve a place https://devonassoc.org.uk/event/climate-change-and-devons-world-class-environment/
This is the last of 15 events being held in 2025, ‘Celebrating Devon’s World-Class Heritage’, which have been supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and UNESCO. After the lecture, there will be a reception with light refreshments which will be held in the area adjacent to the lecture theatre. This will allow participants to engage with the speaker and members of the Devonshire Association, who will be able to explain the various activities of the Association which take place across the county every year.
Professor PETER STOTT MBE is an international leader in the detection and attribution of climate change. He led the team that provided one of the most important demonstrations that anthropogenic emissions were to blame for global temperature changes and also led the first study to link an individual weather event – the 2003 European heatwave – with human induced climate change. He leads the Climate Monitoring and Attribution team of the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research at the Met Office in Exeter. In 2021, he published the book Hot Air: the Inside Story of the Battle Against Climate Change Denial, a thorough account of the decades-long battle to deny or downplay the existence of the climate crisis, for which he was shortlisted for the 2022 RSL Christopher Bland Prize.
