Students give thyme to help care home

By | |

A group of college students have helped transform a local care home’s outside space with the addition of herbs and and bedding plants.

Owner of North Hill Nursing Home, David Smith said how “excited” everyone was at the home to be the beneficiaries of the project.

“We have had to groups of students who have spent the year designing then clearing, planting and painting the woodwork of several flower beds around the home as part of their community course,” he said.

“This has been an incredibly difficult task as the flower beds were over grown and unkempt and the weather has not always been kind – however, the results are a pleasure to see!”

The student’s hard work has resulted in beautiful flower beds and herb gardens that the residents and their families can enjoy.

Tutor for the ‘Skills for Independence and Work’ course, Lucy Lawler, explained how hard the student groups have worked.

“Over the past year they have had to work in some variable Cornish weathers but this hasn’t stopped them achieving some great results,” she continued.

“We acquired some bedding plants and herbs from our sister site at Carthew, Heaven Scent and the students all worked particularly hard, getting really stuck in with transforming the gardens – some are thinking about volunteering during their free time in the summer to keep an eye on their hard work.”

David added that the project demonstrated that young people can make an excellent contribution to their local area.

“We all at North Hill wish to thank them and all the staff involved in this project for their hard work and look forward to more projects we can take on together,” he said.
