Students demonstrate how it’s technically done at the annual Technology Showcase

By | |

South Devon College students had a taste of the technical during the annual Technology Showcase Day held in the College’s Hi-Tech & Digital Centre.

The event, held to encourage cross college collaborative projects, inspires student ideas and enhances project capabilities, was available to students across all age groups and curriculum subjects, from T Levels and HNCs to students from our Ambition programme.

There were demonstrations on the equipment and kit available at the Hi-Tech and Digital Centre, including material testing, 3D printing and design, and laser cutting.

There were also opportunities for students to ‘have a go’ in the sessions, and this included using a wind tunnel to test aerodynamics, getting hands-on with automotive paintwork, an engineering workshop and app development.

The college has state-of-the-art technology facilities available to students, including CNC routing and laser machines, 3D scanners and printers, and even an R35 speed boat. Staff and current students were on hand to explain the opportunities available and how the facilities can be used in cross-college collaborations in many different curriculum areas.

Justin Price, a Level 2 Maritime Studies student, said: “As a group we were intrigued by the amount of technology and machinery we have at South Devon College. It was a wonderful experience where we were able to see these technologies up close in person, see demonstrations and also have a go. It was great and as a group we would love to attend again.”

Students were inspired to think how the technology could be used for both curriculum or personal projects, using creativity and encouragement.

Becky Marler, Trainer Facilitator at South Devon Marine Academy, said: “The Technology Showcase was both inspiring and enlightening for my Level 2 Maritime Studies students. They were fully engaged in the great variety of technology on show. They received demonstrations and also participated in tasks. Collaboration at its best!”
