An annual Industry Week has given Cornish catering students plenty of food for thought, as they contemplate the different career paths available for them after completing their qualifications.

More than 10 professional catering and hospitality guests gave demos or workshop sessions at Cornwall College St Austell, from industry professionals such as St Austell Brewery, Etheringtons Butchery, Aussie Smoker, Little Bakehouse, Cornish Coffee, Longstore, Lobbs Butchery and Carlyon Bay.

Enthusiastic students chose from a multitude of sessions over two days, in which they discovered more about the different career paths available to them after college; from working with coffee or wine to baking or butchery.

Team Lead, Steve Rudd said he could feel the rooms come “alive with enthusiasm of the demonstrators and students”.

“It was such a great experience from my point of view to see our learners engaging with industry experts and more importantly enjoying and learning at the same time.

“This year has worked well in that we have seen industry experts enjoying time with our learners, and then offering work experience and actively asking when we are planning the next one.”

Steve added it was great to see the engagement and made him very proud of the learners.

Level 3 Professional Cookery student at Cornwall College St Austell, Sikira Blight Bevan, said it was a “fantastic opportunity” to get an insight into so many businesses within the industry.

“To learn so many new skills in the week is in invaluable,” she continued.

“The course at Cornwall College St Austell is fantastic, I would definitely recommend this course to other students looking to get into the industry.”
