College students step up to help jobseekers find employment

By | |

City College Plymouth is working in partnership with The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Drake Circus and hospitality businesses located in the city to help a group of jobseekers find employment.

The College is running a sector-based work academy on behalf of the Jobcentre, which will introduce participants to fantastic opportunities within the hospitality sector.

Hospitality and catering students and staff at the College will help the job seekers get to grips with some of the duties performed by front-of-house staff and by those working in the kitchen.

The academy is running for three weeks and includes sessions on employability skills, where participants will gain qualifications that will help them in their search for work. Towards the end of the academy, managers from the Theatre Royal and The Copthorne Hotel will be speaking with the jobseekers to tell them about their upcoming vacancies and will be encouraging them to apply. The College has been prepping the participants with interview skills in readiness for interviews with these employers.

Ashley Archer, City College Plymouth Training Officer, said: “We are very excited to be working in partnership with the DWP, Drake Circus and local businesses such as the Theatre Royal Plymouth and the Copthorne Hotel. These employers are renowned in Plymouth and it’s great for the city that they are supporting us to help people into employment.”

Larry Moody, College Academy Manager of Hospitality and Catering, said: “This is a great opportunity for our students to share what they have been learning; teaching others is often one of the best ways of reinforcing their own knowledge and understanding, and it improves their own employability. Added to that, our students will benefit from knowing they are actively involved with improving the lives of others.”

People currently looking for work who would like to find out more about future sector-based work academies are asked to speak to their job coach for more information.
