Inspiring women and girls in STEAM – celebrating Ada Lovelace Day

In celebration of Ada Lovelace Day, the woman who is widely regarded as the first ever computer programmer, Engine Shed and SETsquared bring together a panel of women in STEM//STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) to talk about their tech careers, which have developed into something much more entrepreneurial.

The event will be a place for women in tech and girls in STEAM education to inspire, be inspired, network and celebrate the original coder, Ada Lovelace.

The panel will be chaired by Monika Radclyffe, Director, SETsquared Bristol

The panel will include;

  • Angela Loveridge, Cyber Scholars
  • Helen Lloyd, Xavier Analytics
  • Helen Tanner, Data Cubed
  • Natalie Thurlby, Jean Golding Institute, University of Bristol

This event is targeted at women and girls to hear from other inspirational women and we encourage anyone to attend, celebrate and be inspired. We welcome you to bring your children, if appropriate and accompanied by an adult.

A selection of teas, coffee and water will be provided.

About Monika Radclyffe;

Monika is responsible for SETsquared Bristol Business Incubation Centre, where she manages the Centre’s strategy and delivery of incubation activity to the 80+ high-tech ventures.

Monika’s career includes setting up a student incubator at the University of Westminster, running an entrepreneurial community of 6,000 members, setting up two co-working spaces and a digital acceleration programme at Dreamstake, facilitating open innovation programmes between corporates, academics and startups,running global innovation events at Fortune 500 firm, Cognizant, and leading delivery on fintech innovation programmes at ENTIQ.

About Angela Loveridge;

Angela Loveridge is the founder of Cyber Scholars. Her vision is to prevent teenage wannabe hackers from getting criminal records and in doing so identify the next generation of cyber security professionals.

She is passionate about supporting children/young people so that they can flourish online and as an independent Online Safety Consultant was nominated for the NSPCC / AoCPP award of Child Protection Trainer of the Year, 2018.

She utilises her background in IT, both academic (MSc IT) and professional (Data Management and Financial Crime Analysis) and also brings her personal experience of raising tech savvy children to her work.”

About Helen Lloyd;

Helen Lloyd is co-founder of the fintech startup Xavier Analytics. Previously Front-End Director at web development agency Hatch Apps, Helen has had over 7 years’ experience as a designer and analyst, and transferred her skills into front-end web development 5 years ago. She has a background in Psychology with a masters degree in Neuroscience, and continues to apply her love of data and understanding of human behaviour to product design and UX. Helen was recently named among one of the Rising Stars in the Innovate Finance Women in Fintech Powerlist 2018.

About Helen Tanner;

Hels set up Data3 in 2017 and she’s loved working on big and small data projects ever since. Born in the corporate world, Hels worked at a senior level for big global businesses. With a career spanning oceanography, meteorology, wealth management, insurance & equity, she’s not your usual data-driven business leader.

Data3 is a data lab and they help SMEs to improve their business performance using data. Their clients see business results improve by 10+%, either by increasing revenue through data-driven sales & marketing activity. Or by reducing costs through identifying data-informed inefficiency. Data3 harness AI, machine learning, predictive analytics and bring it to SMEs.

About Natalie Thurlby;

Natalie joined the Jean Golding Institute as the Data Science Specialist in August 2018. Her main responsibilities at the institute include helping researchers at the university with data science queries through the Ask JGI service, and carrying out data science projects. After completing her first degree in Maths and Physics at the University of Manchester, she moved to the University of Bristol to study for her PhD in Computational Biology, which she’s currently finishing. Her research focuses on predicting human phenotype and protein function using clustering and outlier detection methodologies.

Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology engineering and maths which aims to increase the profile of women in STEM and create new role models for both girls and women studying or working in STEM.
