The South West Business Council, in conjunction with the North Devon Biosphere Foundation (NDBF), will be holding a conference on the 7th of September at Petroc College in Devon.

At our conference we will focus on why our collective understanding of our environment is critical and also how we can engage in programmes that make a difference. Examples of those programmes include the Natural Capital Fund; the Smart Biosphere and what that means for us and, finally, the Natural Capital Marketplace (NCM). The NCM will, we believe, be a key platform for business to engage with, especially when it comes to ensuring they can meet their Net Zero plans.

Confirmed speakers include:

Tony Juniper CBE, a campaigner, writer, sustainability advisor, leading British environmentalist and Chair of Natural England will be discussing what role natural capital planning can play in guiding nature recovery – a North Devon perspective.

Ian J. Bateman OBE, US-NAS, FBA, FRSA, FRSB, is a Professor of Environmental Economics and Director of the Land, Environment, Economics and Policy Institute (LEEP) at the University of Exeter, UK. He has advised on environmental improvement to senior Government ministers for over a decade and worked with over 200 private sector companies. At this conference he will be speaking on policy and business decision making for Net Zero Plus: The Natural Capital Approach.

Lord Robin Teverson, Chair of the Cornwall and Scilly Local Nature Partnership, and front bench spokesperson in the House of Lords for energy/climate change will be discussing ‘The South West blue economy; environment and growth hand in hand’.

Professor Vicky Pope, founding Editor in Chief of Climate Resilience and Sustainability for the Royal Meteorological Society which publishes international interdisciplinary research on climate change and its implications.

Rob Passmore, Commercial Lead at the Biosphere Foundation, who will be covering the Natural Capital programmes being created in the North Devon Biosphere. Rob will highlight the scale of the opportunity, the market barriers that exist and our breakthrough strategy to overcome them.
